Facebook CPC Ads. Day One
I have been experimenting with Facebook PPC ads.
They have been running for one day now and I thought I would let you know how I am getting on.
I chose a merchant that I don’t usually promote, with a highish commission and conversion rate. I am linking to them directly (in accordance with their ppc policy).
The first thing that struck me about the facebook ads is the ability to be very specific in your demographic.
In addition to choosing your country (and geographical region), you can chose age range, interests, educational status, political views and marital status.
In addition for your selection, you can see how many facebook members there are. So even if you didn’t want to place an advert it is a great source of interest regarding Facebook Demographics.
Ok. I have heard bad things about the Facebook Fliers and their conversion rates, these are just personal anecdotes so may reflect the experience of the many. I decided to keep the campaign small.
Looking at $5 a day and $0.10 maximum click spend, here is what my first day looked like.
| Date | Imp. | Clicks | CTR (%) | Avg. CPC ($) | Avg. CPM ($) | Spent ($) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 11/06/2007 | 11125 | 10 | 0.09 | 0.02 | 0.02 | 0.17 |
(Facebook’s calendar seems to be a day behind)
Oooh a massive 10 clicks from over 11,000 impressions. I am glad that I am not running a CPM campaign.
Nice to see the click spend is less than a penny a click though. I am sure that this will go up a lot as the ads get more popular with advertisers.

I know it’s early days, but have you seen any actual sales off that? I tried a couple of small campaigns myself recently on the flyers. I got about the same sort of click and impressions, but not a single conversion. I just wonder if people at Facebook are not in buying mode, like they are when they use Google. I’m going to give the news ads a go myself at some point soon.

With just 10 clicks, no sales. I hope to have some by the time I have had 100 though.
Also it has only been running 1 day and there is a cookie period on this affiliate programme

You’ve inspired me to give it a punt too
Be interesting to compare results… Good time of year to start I would think…

I was experimenting with the Flyers Pro, and these were working great - made about £5-6k profit in a month. But then they killed that system and moved to the new ad platform which is simply not working for me at all. I’ll keep trying though, as the traffic levels are HUGE. I was getting 300 or more clicks per day, with 10 - 20 conversions (high value)

Facebook seems to have a lot of potential. I can’t wait to get my teeth into this. I just need to finish off some PPC stuff I’m currently doing. God I wish i had more time on hand.
Interesting post. Do keep us updated.
Steve, well done mate. I’m inspired. If you don’t mind me asking, what was your thought process in deciding what demographics to target for your niche?

I’m merely. impressed at anyone who can keep an ad running - Facebook keep moving the goalposts for advertisers. Bizarrely, credit card ads are on the banned list, for example, for Flyers Pro.
